My own life and my opinions are shared at When I was 69.

REMEMBER: In North America, the month of September 1752 was exceptionally short, skipping 11 days, when the Gregorian Calendar was adapted from the old Julian one, which didn't have leap year days.

John Cannon, veteran of "the Late War"

John CANNON
Grant of 100 acres for military service under John Ellis in the North Carolina line in "the late War" dated 1796

John CANNON, 1744–1806

Birth 18 MAR 1744 Goochland Co, VA

Death OCT 1806 maybe Knox County, TN

He is listed on the rolls of Edgecomb County NC militia.

I wrote about his wife, Nancy Ann Whitlow Cannon, on a blog last year (HERE).
One descendant says that he married 3 times.  That might explain a marriage listed to Ann Whitlow and one to Nancy Ann Whitlow, on different dates and places.  But that also might be the name of one woman.

We do know John Cannon is listed on the Edgecomb County NC census index for 1786.

There are some interesting stories about him, including publications by the Daughters of the American Revolution, which are generally accurate (with some exceptions.)

Biographical Directory of the Tennessee General Assembly, Vol. 1 (The daughter Cynthia Cannon Rogers is mistakenly listed, as she was actually his grand-daughter)

Cannon, John:The History of Sweetwater Valley

The above story mistakenly gives his grand-daughter Cynthia Cannon as his daughter, who married M. C. Rogers.  She was actually the daughter of his son William Henry Cannon and his wife Catharine Henderson Cannon.  Cyntha O. Cannon did marry Micajah Clack Rogers and move to Huntsville Texas, as they are also my ancestors.  Their wedding is one of the first entries in the Rogers Family Bible, (a primary source document.)
"Cyntha Cannon, Daughter of William and Catharine Cannon, (and Micajah Clack Rogers) were married at the residence of William Cannon, in Sevier County, Tennesse, February 4th, 1819."
John's son, William Henry Cannon has his grave marker in Sevier County TN in Trundle Family  Cemetery and his wife Catharine Henderson Cannon was probably buried there as well. I've blogged about them before...Here.

The children I've recently seen on Ancestry of John and Nancy Ann Whitlow Cannon include:

William Henry 1771-1868
Jane Cannon 1771-1860
Elizabeth (Betsey) M. Cannon 1778-1849
John Cannon 1779-1864
Robert C. Cannon 1781-1854
Martha Elizabeth (Patsey) Cannon Nelson 17841-1862

There are many "hints" about these siblings, so I'll spend the next hour checking to see what is newly been added to this tree.

I've also seen some trees over on Ancestry that give another son, Henry Cannon (1780-1850) who died in Cannon's Bluff, McIntosh County, GA.  Since the tree also had Cynthia listed as John and Nancy's daughter rather than grand-daughter, I tend to take this information as just maybe possible...I wish somehow they knew what I know about my grandmother times 3 greats.

I'm going to post this to 52 Ancestors, 52 weeks!
The theme this week is "12" and I don't really know what to connect to for 12 anything.
